In 2009, Birmingham had just over one million residents (1,028,000). The age profile of the City’s population is youthful and residents come from a wide range of ethnic backgrounds. The City’s population has been growing since 2001. The number of people from other countries coming to live in Birmingham has been particularly high in recent years. However, there is a continuing net outflow of people moving to other parts of the UK. The population of the City Centre has grown as a result of ongoing regeneration and redevelopment. 60% of total households are owner occupiers.

The 2007 ethnic group population estimates produced by the Office for National Statistics show Birmingham to be a diverse City. 66.7% of people consider themselves to be White, 21% Asian, 6.7% Black, 3.2% Mixed Race and 2.4% Chinese or another ethnic group.

Birmingham also contains some of the busiest road and rail networks in the country (Spaghetti Junction and New Street Station). It also contains Sutton Park which is one of the largest urban parks in Europe.
