What is The Conurbation?
The West Midlands Conurbation is made up of 7 metropolitan councils with a total population of over 2 million people, nearly half of these living in Birmingham. It borders 3 counties: Warwickshire, Staffordshire and Worcestershire.
The West Midlands Conurbation is associated with a high density urban nature, with key rail routes, and New Street Station in Birmingham City Centre, which is the busiest mainline station in the country in terms of passenger throughput and services provided. It also has a number of major roads and a complex motorway network, including stretches described as being some of the busiest motorway sections in the UK.
There are also a significant number of flight paths in the region due to Birmingham International Airport, which sits on the boundary between Birmingham and Solihull and Coventry Airport in neighbouring Warwickshire. The West Midlands contains several highly industrialised areas, most notably Sandwell, and also has 9 top tier and 26 lower tier COMAH sites.
The Conurbation hosts many conference, sporting and entertainment venues including National Indoor Arena, International Convention Centre, National Exhibition Centre, and several football stadiums.
The Conurbation forms one of four Local Resilience Forums which make up the Region:
- Warwickshire
- West Mercia
- Staffordshire
